My Room
05:03
|
|||
I whisper to you from my room.
A whisper is a feeling...
I always liked this building.
To me one thing was clear:
I knew that one day I'd live here.
My neighbors come and go.
I hear them through the ceiling.
But what they're up to, I don't know.
I am so still.
I make no sound.
They never know when I'm around.
Sometimes I leave my music on
And go downstairs out to the lawm
And listen to what it's like
To be on the outside.
And then I go back up the stair
And through my door and to my chair
And think about what it's like
To be on the inside.
I don't pay for my water,
And so I leave it on.
It sounds, to me, just like a song.
But I pay for my light,
And so I leave it off.
The dawn coming in so strange and soft.
I had to change my life.
I felt it coming on.
The past is better when it's gone.
And so I left my wife.
I left my children too.
I didn't know what else to do.
Sometimes I leave my music on
And go downstairs out to the lawn
And listen to what it's like
To be on the outside.
And then I go back up the stair
And through my door and to my chair
Remembering what it was like
To be on the inside.
I whisper to you from my room.
This room invites the evening.
I hope it don't get dark too soon.

High Water
05:17
|
|||
Rain comes down on a river town,
And it doesn't stop for a week.
Life on the floodplain gone with the flow.
The flow.
The flow.
All around, even underground,
The muddy water runs free.
Water jumping the banks as it's picking up speed.
Up speed.
Up.
High water
A young girl found in a dressing gown
Hanging upside down in a tree.
Separate the body from the debris.
Debris.
De.
High water.
Brittle water.
High water.
Brittle water.
(Brittle water.)
The river town is busy now
With many hard days ahead.
Rebuild the house and bury the dead.
The dead.
Da.
High water.
Brittle water.
High water.
Brittle water.
(Brittle water.)

I Live My Life in Shadow
02:38
|
|||
I am the one who lingers near the stair.
As you go by, you may be unaware,
But you'll look back to see that I'm not there,
For I live my life in shadow.
I never think about the things I say,
But you must listen to them anyway.
I hold you captive every single day,
As I live my life in shadow.
Oh no, your past must go.
Put it in a place where no one will know.
Oo oo, your future too.
When all is said and done, it's best.
Oo oo, your children too.
When all is said and done, it's best.
There may be times when I will let you be,
And you will think that I have set you free,
But I will always bring you back to me,
For I live my life in shadow.
Yes, I live my life in shadow.
In shadow.
In shadow.

Monkey Man
04:47
|
|||
I been drinking since dawn.
I been swinging through the trees
'Cause in the state I'm in,
I do just as I please.
Now it's raining so hard.
I left my cigarettes in my car.
I'm so long overdue.
I'm a monkey man for you.
Let's talk about love.
Let's forget about the past.
'Cause with my fingers in your glove,
I can make a good thing last.
There are stories you hear
About that one so dear.
I could tell you a few.
I'm a monkey man for you.
A monkey man, a monkey man.
You gotta give me something
I can understand.
I'm a monkey man.
A monkey man, a monkey man.
You gotta give me something,
Take me by the hand.
I'm a monkey man.
When you're on the road,
And you're all alone,
I'll put a spell on you,
And I'll take you home.
But now it's Saturday,
And you're so far away.
The telephone won't do.
I'm a monkey man for you.

Wounded Belly Blues
03:23
|
|||
Well I come creepin' into town,
I needed money, needed wealth.
And I saw the sign said open,
So I thought I'd help myself.
Pulled my pistol from my pocket,
Had it pointed at his head.
But I guess he saw me comin',
And he shot me first instead.
Hey, I got trouble.
More than I can use.
I got a pistol in my hand,
I got the wounded belly blues.
They got my picture in the camera there
For everyone to see.
If they don't find me in my house,
Then they come lookin' out for me.
But you know I won't be home
'Cause I been hidin' in the woods.
I tried to help my situation,
But I know it ain't no good.
Hey, I got trouble.
More than I can use.
I got my picture in the paper,
Got the wounded belly blues.
Yeah, I got trouble.
It's followin' me.
Oo Oo Oo trouble.
Well now they're bringin' out the hounds.
I see 'em comin' up the hill.
And if that hungry wolf don't get me,
Then that hungry justice will.
As I said, I needed money.
Used to do it all the time.
But the counter clerk reject me,
And I didn't get a dime.
Hey, I got trouble,
More than I can use.
I got a bullet in my pocket,
Got the wounded belly blues.

One Last Ride
03:31
|
|||
It's been three days since you've been gone.
We buried you today.
It happened all so suddenly.
There was barely time to pray.
I laid a flower upon your stone,
And then I turned away.
No, today is not my friend,
And time ain't on my side.
I guess I'll go downtown
For one last ride.
The house is nearly empty now.
I don't want our things in here.
For each one holds a memory,
And each memory brings a tear.
It all recalled our happy days
And when I held you near.
No, the past is not my friend,
And every night I've cried.
I guess I'll go downtown
For one last ride.
One last ride
Through the world we once knew.
One last ride
Through every memory of you.
One last ride.
What am I going to do
With all the love and dreams we cherished
Right up til the day you perished?
Now all these thoughts of love and dreams
Have left me bruised and sore.
The things that made me happy once
Ain't a-workin' anymore.
You know I won't be back again
When I walk through that door,
'Cause the future ain't my friend.
No, it's not where I'll reside.
I guess I'll go downtown
For one last ride.
I guess I'll go downtown
For one last ride.
I guess I'll go downtown
For one last ride.

Doctor, Doctor
03:08
|
|||
Doctor, doctor please,
Take this away from me.
Doctor, doctor please,
Take this away from me.
I've been down with a sickness
That will take my family from me.
And my home and my business,
They'll be gone, then where will I be?
Doctor, doctor please,
Must this be my fate?
Doctor, doctor can you help me?
I pray it's not too late.
I'm afraid of living
With the thought that I'll disappear.
In this life of misgiving,
I must ask was I even here.
Doctor doctor please,
Please restore my health.
Save me from this world.
Save me from myself.
I'll go on to my limit,
Til I fall like leaves from a tree.
It will seem like a minute,
And in fact, it's all I'll ever be.
Oh, how can that be?

All the Way
04:35
|
|||
I can see the sun,
But I can't see the sky.
I can see the sun,
But I can't see the sky.
I can see the sun,
But not today.
This time I'm goin' all the way.
There's a voice I hear,
It make me weep and moan.
The a voice I hear,
It make me weep and moan.
There's a voice I hear.
What do it say?
This time I'm goin' all the way.
Take me up.
I'm a shadow on the outside
Lookin' in.
Just a shadow on the outside
Lookin' in.
I'm a shadow on the light of day,
And this time I'm goin' all the way.
Take me up.
Won't you take me up
Before you take me home?
You gotta take me up
Before you take me home.
Won't you take me up?
What do you say?
This time I'm goin' all the way.
Take me up.

Fatherless Children
05:31
|
|||
Fatherless children,
All on your own.
Your daddy has picked up
And left you alone.
Your mother is angry,
But she keeps her faith.
She knows only love
Can conquer the hate.
Nothing comes easy.
Even the small things.
So close your eyes
And see what the morning brings.
Caught him in the hall
With his things and all.
You want to look him in the eye
But it made you cry.
Fatherless children,
Your father is falling.
From where he is now,
He can't hear you calling.
All out of time
Out of money, out of love,
Out of every single good thing
You could ever think of.
Fatherless children,
Inside your day dreams,
You see him coming
To the front porch swing.
Fatherless children,
I am his brother,
And I still love him.
So does your mother.
Fatherless children.

Walk Tall in the Jungle
04:47
|
|||
Walk tall in the jungle.
Head high, you can tell which way the wind blow.
Walk tall in the jungle.
It doesn't matter if you're tree high or slinky low.
Walk tall when you're coming into town.
Walk tall it's a Saturday Saturday,
And it's a jungle.
Walk tall in the jungle.
In your stride you reveal all you've ever known.
Walk tall in the jungle.
Walk with pride, though you walk alone.
Walk tall when you're headed into town.
Walk tall it's a Saturday Saturday,
And it's a jungle.
Twilight brings new mood to things.
The young girl screams,
The policeman seems ok.
It happens every day.
Yonder, 'cross the river, are scenes.
In the jungle home,
There're a million jungle dreams.
(I don't know what that means.)
Make friends in the jungle.
Walking tall in the hot sun or summer rain.
Make friends in the jungle.
Find your place in the food chain.
Walk tall when you're walking in your sleep.
Walk tall it's a Saturday Saturday,
And it's a jungle.
Walk tall in the jungle.
Walk tall in the jungle.
Walk tall in the jungle.
And you won't sleep tonight.
Walk tall in the jungle.
Walk tall in the jungle.
Walk tall in the jungle.
And you won't sleep tonight.
You won't sleep.
You won't sleep tonight.
You won't sleep.
You won't sleep tonight.

All the Little Fishies
03:33
|
|||
All the little fishies in the deep blue see go,
"Yee hee hee hee hee."
All the little birdies that we know go,
"Yo ho ho ho ho."
All the little doggies needing our help go,
"Yelp yelp yelp yelp yelp."
All the little kitties that we ever knew go,
"Mew mew mew mew mew."
Long time.
Long time, what a time.
Said it was a memory, but you left it behind.
Boo hoo, what's you gonna do?
The lady with the baby made a fool of you.
And all the little fishies in the deep blue sea...
Long line. Take it as a sign.
A waiter the a grater and a bottle of wine.
What's this? Stolen like a kiss.
Tap it with a hammer and be sure you don't miss.
And all the little fishies in the deep blue sea...
So kind. Up from behind.
Struggle to recover like a lover gone blind.
Ooo wee, happy as can be,
The lady with the baby made a fool of me.
And all the little fishies in the deep blue sea go.
All the little birdies that we know go.
All the little doggies needing our help go.
All the little kitties that we ever knew go.
Long time.
Long time.
Long time.
